2010 Apollo Stakes Preview – Alcopop Likely Nominee

February 11th, 2010

On Saturday February 20 Rosehill Racecourse is set to host the $250 000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) as the headline act of their Apollo Stakes Day meeting conducted by the Sydney Turf Club.

Although many of the nation’s star gallopers are engaged in one of the fantastic races being conducted at Moonee Valley Racecourse’s Blue Diamond Stakes Day in Melbourne on the 20th of February, the Apollo Stakes is still sure to attract a quality array of contenders.

In years past many of the horses that tackle the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) move on to the Apollo Stakes as the next logical race in their Sydney autumn campaigns.

This year’s Expressway Stakes was held on February 6 and was won by the Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo ahead of Dao Dao. It is likely both of these runners will be nominated for the Apollo Stakes when nominations close on Monday 15 February.

Another Expressway Stakes runner, fourth placegetter Centennial Park, will also be nominated for the Apollo Stakes by trainer David Payne.

Trainer Grahame Begg has said his in-form mare Palacio De Cristal will resume racing in the Apollo Stakes following her terrific last-start victory in the Villiers Stakes (1600m) back in December.

Also destined for the 2010 Apollo Stakes is star five-year-old stayer Alcopop

Also destined for the 2010 Apollo Stakes is five-year-old stayer Alcopop. The Jeune gelding trained by Jake Stephens has won seven of his 11 race starts but has not had a run since placing a credible sixth in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

He will have his maiden Sydney start in the Apollo Stakes with his long term goal being Group 1 The BMW (2400m) on April 3.

Following the nomination round, the acceptances making up the 2010 Apollo Stakes final field will be announced on Thursday February 18.
