2010 Apollo Stakes Final Field

February 18th, 2010

This Saturday the scenic Rosehill Gardens Racecourse will host the next feature race day of the coveted Sydney Autumn Carnival with the running of the $250, 000 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (a.k.a. Winning Edge Presentations Classic).

For 2010, the Apollo Stakes has drawn a field of 13 top gallopers ready to fight it out over the 1400m, including eight Group 1 winners.

The Chris Waller-trained Rangirangdoo has secured barrier one on Saturday. The highly fancied last start winner of the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) is sure to start as the odds-on favourite following his impressive recent form at the track as well as the favourable barrier draw.

Waller also has six-year-old Danleigh engaged in the Apollo Stakes, starting on the far outside from barrier 13 with Hugh Bowman aboard.

Legendary trainer Bart Cummings will be represented on Saturday by Roman Emperor, the four-year-old drawn ideally in barrier two.

Other top picks for this year’s Apollo Stakes include the Gai Waterhouse-trained Epson Handicap winner Rock Kingdom in barrier eight and the impressive Alcopop (br.12) in his first Sydney start.

Alcopop’s trainer Jake Stephens is using the Apollo Stakes to test the promising five-year-olds’ potential in the weight-for-age features.

Theseo, in barrier nine, is the other starter for Waterhouse on Saturday. The six-year-old gelding, once one of Australia’s most impressive middle-distance horses, is having his first race start since injuring his leg in April last year.

Classy mare Palacio De Cristal, prepared by Grahame Begg, has also been accepted as an Apollo Stakes starter. The Villiers Stakes winner has drawn well with barrier three.

The other top mare to watch on Saturday is the Peter Snowden-trained Purple. The in-form four-year-old aiming for her seventh win from 18 starts after running second to Zipping last race start in the Sandown Classic back in November. Purple will jump from barrier six on Saturday.

The Apollo Stakes is the only Group race feature at the meeting and is scheduled to run as race six at 4:20pm.
