2012 Apollo Stakes Nominations & Weight

February 21st, 2012

The 2012 Apollo Stakes nominations feature 16 top class names in a race that can be split in two halves.

On one side we’ve got a list of stayers that are just starting up their autumn campaigns on the road to the Australian Cup and ultimately the other staying features up in Sydney.

On the other side of the draw we’ve got a group of natural sprinters, horses that are primed to win this event and potentially rise to Group 1 level afterwards.

It creates an interesting matchup given how often we’ve seen in the past a stayer not expected to be competitive over the trip has come out and won on sheer class.

We’re not saying it’ll happen again but Southern Speed has already showed this preparation that she could be effective over 1400m despite winning the Caulfield Cup in the spring.

All of the horses will be up against it this Saturday though with the unbeaten Rain Affair expected to be the star of the show.

The Jo Pride trained runner has destroyed all before him so far in the lower grades but now he faces a Group 2 field and the biggest test of his career.

It’s going to be hard to know where to look in the 2012 Apollo Stakes and this is probably a race worth taping if you can.

Every one of these horses will be running on this preparation (barring injury) so even if they’re not in the top three their runs can’t be dismissed.

Particularly keep an eye on horses like Hawk Island, Tullamore and Niwot who should be running on late but likely in the second half of the field.
