Trainer Gai Waterhouse confirmed talented mares Diamond Drille and Queenstown in the 2015 Apollo Stakes (1400m) final field and is confident the pair are more than a chance of success at Randwick on Saturday.

Steadily building to the task over the 2014 edition of the Autumn Carnival, Diamond Drille caused a huge boilover on Day 2 of The Championships when charging home as a rank $41 to win the Group 1 Queen Of The Turf Stakes (1600m).

Securing several competitive results of her own over the 2014 autumn, Queenstown displayed a keen turn of foot late to take out the Listed Grafton Cup (2350m) most notably on July 10th.

Thrilled with the continuing building form and class of both runners, Waterhouse told Racing Ahead she is confident both runners will perform well in the 2014 Apollo Stakes, but credited Diamond Drille’s jockey Tim Clark with offering the best chance of success.

“I can’t think of a jockey who understands my horses better than Tim Clark,” Waterhouse said.

“Tim just gets the horses running; he positions them very well and always gives them an excellent, excellent chance.

“We’ve got the Doncaster Handicap in front of us. It will be a very difficult race to win but they’ve come on really well.

“I wish I could say they were good things but they’ll both run well and give the punters a good show.

“They wouldn’t be going if they weren’t fit.”

Winning the Group 3 Aspiration Quality (1600m) most notably in the lead-up to her Queen Of The Turf Stakes triumph, Diamond Drille was unable to make an impact over three spring starts, but if offered a great chances of first-up success in the 2015 Apollo Stakes from the rails draw.

Progressing to fifth behind the likes of subsequent Group 1 champion He’s Your Man in the Listed Winter Challenge (1500m) before a luckless run for tenth in the Listed Wyong Cup (2100m) most recently, Queenstown has been charged with overcoming barrier 12 in the Apollo Stakes.
