February 10th, 2016

Eleven runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s featured 2016 Group 2 Apollo Stakes (1400m) at Royal Randwick; highlighted by the inclusion of several previous winners at the highest level of racing.

Winx has been set for an appearance in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) on Day 2 of The Championships this year and has been confirmed to begin her campaign from barrier 1 in the 2016 Apollo Stakes.

Capping a standout autumn and winter preparation with success in the Group 1 Queensland Oaks (2200m), Winx returned to racing in spring for success in the Group 2 Theo Marks Stakes (1300m); progressing to a second win at the highest level in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) before taking out the major Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 24th.

Hugh Bowman takes the ride on the Street Cry mare, who will be very hard to beat in the Apollo Stakes with only 57kgs in tow.

Trainer Chris Waller has also confirmed resuming stayers Who Shot Thebarman (barrier 7) and Grand Marshal (barrier 6) in the 2016 Apollo Stakes field.

Solicit is sure to have taken plenty of benefit from her first-up run for second in the Group 2 Expressway Stakes (1200m) a fortnight ago and could very well receive the run of the Apollo Stakes from barrier 4.

A strong and consistent performer through her entire racing career since first appearing on course competitively in 2013, Solicit resumed in spring for a close second in the Group 2 Tristarc Stakes (1400m); progressing to a luckless run for eighth in the Group 1 Myer Classic (1600m) but capping her year with success in the Group 3 Summoned Stakes (1500m) on November 14th.

Kerrin McEvoy has picked up the ride on the Street Cry mare this weekend who will be tough to run down in the final straight should she open a lead early.

Dibayani posted a number of commendable results for David Hayes and Tom Dabernig through spring but will need luck in the 2016 Apollo Stakes after drawing the outside barrier 11.

Dibayani began his racing career in Britain and Ireland in 2012 before being transferred to the care of Michael Chang in Hong Kong, where he experienced plenty of success at the highest level without breaking through for a Group 1 win.

Appearing in Australia for third in the Group 2 PB Lawrence Stakes (1400m) on August 15th, the Shamardal gelding progressed to third in the Group 2 Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) but ended his campaign ninth in each of the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) and Group 3 David Jones Cup (2000m).

Having trialled well in the lead-up to his competitive return, Tye Angland will take the ride on the son of Shamardal this weekend.
