Winx Dominant in 2017 Apollo Stakes Betting

February 9th, 2017

Twelve runners have been confirmed to chase Group 2 glory at Royal Randwick on Saturday, but it is champion mare Winx who understandably dominates 2017 Apollo Stakes betting markets.

Winx is undefeated for close to two years; a run of form that has spanned thirteen races and a total of nine wins at the highest level; highlighted by her consecutive wins in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m).

Resuming in spring for a comfortable win in the Group 2 Warwick Stakes (1400m), the Street Cry mare won the Group 1 George Main Stakes (1600m) and Group 1 Ladbrokes Stakes (2000m) before producing a career-best effort to win the Cox Plate by more than eight lengths.

Drawn ideally in barrier 3, Winx will be partnered by regular hoop Hugh Bowman and should just win the Apollo Stakes with only 57kgs in tow.

Interestingly figuring as the only other runner currently available at Apollo Stakes odds of less-than $10, Hartnell ($9.50) is a proven first-up performer and will be ridden by James Doyle for the first time competitively on Saturday.

Hartnell returned to racing in spring for second behind Winx in the Warwick Stakes, before delivering a smart field a resounding defeat in the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) a fortnight later.

Repeating the dose in the Group 2 Hill Stakes (2000m) on September 17th, the Authorized gelding claimed a second Group 1 title in the Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 2nd.

Running second to Winx in the Cox Plate, albeit well off the pace, Hartnell was last seen finishing an impressive third in the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November.

Hartnell has reportedly taken plenty of benefit from his time away from racing and will leave from barrier 7 in Apollo Stakes.

Dibayani has returned to racing in typically smart form this time and is the sole occupant of the third line of Apollo Stakes betting at a generous $19 quote for success, or $2.15 to finish in the first three.

Dibayani was unlucky not to post his first Group 1 win during the recent Spring Carnival; pipped on the line by Hauraki in the Group 1 Epsom Handicap (1600m) most notably.

Resuming from a freshen-up for second in the Group 2 Villiers Stakes (1600m) on December 17th, the Shamardal gelding will again contest the Apollo Stakes fresh and is not without a chance of challenging Winx and Hartnell.
